What should I do if someone I know if in the hospital? How can I support the parents if a child is in the hospital?

*Seattle Children’s Hospital gift shop: 206-987-6652 or giftshop.seattlechildrens.org – you can order gifts that will get delivered directly to the patient.

If you know of an adult or child in the hospital and you want to put together a basket to drop off, here are some ideas of what to include: Reusable water bottle, robe, blankets, pillows, PJ, warm socks with grip on the bottom, snacks, travel size games, slime/puddy, lip balm, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, phone charger, scrunchie, lotion, journal, pens, coloring books, colored pencils.

What should I do if someone I know has lost someone they love? How do I help them through their grief?

One thing we have learned over the years is that it is better to say something than nothing at all. Send a quick text or a handwritten card but let the person know you are not expecting a response. Avoid phrases like, “Everything happens for a reason” or, “At least…” or “Let me know if you need anything”. Keep your words simple and honest, and remember, most people are not going to reach out and ask for what they need. People often may not even know what they need.

Everyone handles grief differently, so try to talk to someone who is close to that person to get an idea of what would be most helpful. Some people appreciate meal trains, but we have found that they can be an overwhelming burden to those who are grieving. Having to rearrange fridge/freezer space, feeling obligated to thank everyone, food allergies etc. Another idea would be gift cards to local food establishments or food delivery services so that they can order food they prefer as needed. If your child participates in an activity with their child, offer to give them a ride. You may notice their yard work falling behind, so pitching in to mow their lawn would be a wonderful blessing.

Put a reminder in your phone on the anniversary of their loss so that you can send a card or text letting them know you have not forgotten.
