Supporting a Loved One in the Hospital

When someone you care about is in the hospital, even small gestures can bring comfort
and connection.

  • Send a thoughtful gift – Seattle Children’s Hospital gift shop offers direct
    delivery to patients (206-987-6652 | giftshop.seattlechildrens.org).

  • Create a care basket – If you’d like to put together a personal care package,
consider items that offer comfort and practicality:
o Reusable water bottle, robe, blankets, pillows
o Cozy PJs and warm socks with grips
    o Snacks, travel-size games, slime/putty
o Lip balm, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner
    o Phone charger, scrunchie, lotion
o Journal, pens, coloring books, colored pencils

Even a small act of kindness can remind someone they’re not alone in their journey.

Helping Someone Through Grief

Loss is deeply personal, and while there’s no perfect way to offer support, simply
showing up can mean everything.

  • Say something, not nothing – A brief text or handwritten card can provide comfort. Let them know you’re thinking of them without expecting a response.
  • Avoid common phrases – Instead of “Everything happens for a reason” or “Let
me know if you need anything,” keep words simple, genuine, and honest.
  • Offer quiet support – Meal trains can be overwhelming, so consider gift cards for local restaurants or delivery services instead.
  • Lend a helping hand – If your child shares an activity with theirs, offer rides. If yard work is piling up, help out with mowing or basic maintenance.
  • Remember important dates – Set a reminder for the anniversary of their loved
one’s passing and send a small message or card to let them know they’re never
    forgotten.

Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, but kindness leaves a lasting impact.
